What to see and do

Vaison la Romaine

As its name infers, the tiny but picturesque town of Vaison la Romaine bears many many traces of Roman occupation, including an ancient Roman amphitheatre. The small Ouvèze river flows through this community and separates the 13th century hill town from the modern settlement by means of the famous Roman bridge which is still in modern use.

An imposing ruin towers above the ancient city centre. It’s a steep walk up to the top and the final part of this route is only really suited to those who are steady on their feet, but the view is rewarding.

The Puymin Museum of Archaeology is a popular tourist destination attracting around 60,000 visitors every year.

You will find that the drive between Ferrassières and Vaison la Romaine is more than worth your while.  On the way, you will drive through a variety of landscapes, pass famous chateaux and find out where many of the regional products originate from. Just before you enter Vaison, you will come across a sign bearing the name of Crestet. This is a tiny village, glued against the side of the mountain as it were, with splendid views across the alley that you have just driven through. Continue to follow the river and, just outside the town, there is a small beach where, in the summer mnoths, you can take a refreshing dip in the blue waters. Another option is a day trip from Vaison: take a tour by car using the D977 and D88 and spend time in Séguret. This village has definitely put itself on the map as one of the most beautiful villages in all of France.
