Cycle racing – Gorges de la Nesque

The Gorges de la Nesque is a beautiful cycling route from Villes-sur-Auzon to Monieux. Of course, it is even more beautiful to follow the Gorges de la Nesque in a circuit via Sault, Bédoin and Mont Ventoux. This is probably one of the most beautiful circuits you could ride in France.

On one side is the Mountain of all Mountains as you ride through a part of Provence with picturesque villages, vineyards, lavender fields and the dramatic views of the Gorges de la Nesque itself. The entire circuit is around 80 kilometres.

“A wonderful experience! Riding under natural bridges shaped by rocks, narrow roads that lead to the most marvellous views… absolutely worth the effort!”

You climb to the top of Mont Ventoux from Bédoin, descend to Chalet Reynard, turn left towards Sault, carry on via a short section of the D1 towards Villes-sur-Auzon and then head towards Gorges de la Nesque / Monieux when you get to the three-way intersection. This leads you to Villes-sur-Auzon, from where you follow the D19 towards Flassan, and from there the D213 back to Bédoin.

There is no actual pass named the “Col de la Nesque”, but if you follow the Gorges de la Nesque cycling route, you will get to a summit. You eventually end up at the Rocher du Cire, roughly 4 kilometres from Monieux. This is the highest point. From that point, you descend towards Monieux, from where you continue on towards Sault. This “Col de la Nesque” even has a profile. Once you have reached the summit, you will find the so-called Belvedere, a viewpoint that offers dramatic views of the rocks and the Gorge directly below. This spot is not signposted, but it is most definitely a spot where you will take some of your most beautiful holiday snaps.

By the way, this is not the only beautiful cycling route that you can put together in this area. You can create some wonderful routes through the many small villages that are dotted around the area. The best route of all, of course, goes all the way around Mont Ventoux. It links up Bédoin, Sault en Malaucene, and Gorges de la Nesque fits into that quite nicely as well.

You will find an Office du Tourisme (Tourist Information Office) in all the places of interest around the area. They have wonderful free leaflets with cycling routes. Be sure to pop in – their information is excellent, and this way you will ensure you don’t miss any of the beauty that the area has to offer.

There are also countless websites that offer more information about the extensive cycling opportunities in this area.
